Inspiration

A couple days ago I had the luxury of treating myself to a day of rejuvination at a clients one day retreat. It was such a beautiful day in so many ways. We were a group of women who shared some key traits. While I was the only who wasn’t a mom, we’re all highly self-motivated, busy, on-a-mission women. Each of us also happened to be entrepreneurs, so our ‘job’ is something very dear to our heart. It really is about our mission. Or, as some may say, our movement.

At one point, our host, Ana, asked us why we were ‘amazing.’ Funnily, even though we’re all obviously amazing, isn’t it so hard to answer the question when we’re suddenly called out to do so on the spot?

I pondered a bit while I let the words come to me. With such a juicy question, I felt I owed it some deep thought.

What tumbled out of my mouth surprised even myself:

“I’m amazing because it’s my mission to make the world a more beautiful place one woman at a time.”

What I’ve realized over the course of my business and working with so many different personality types, ages and careers is that how I work with women really is a transformative process. And sometimes, you have to give yourself a little credit! (I know you do the same thing – we’re women, it’s our nature!).

When someone is ready to invest in themselves to work with someone who can give them the tools to live every day in style … it becomes about much more than the clothes. It’s about confidence, excitement, fun, play, love and action.

It’s a complete transformation.

It’s a decision to stop settling for good and moving into creating great.

So, why are you amazing?

Are you the next woman to make this world more beautiful?

BY CATHERINE CASSIDY First Tuesday

This is a great passion of mine. I left the crazy busy world of corporate Fashion because of my need to really make a difference and affect the lives of women. It really goes back to my time working at Nordstrom while in college. It felt really great being able to help a woman who was not at all looking forward to shopping for an outfit for an event, yet by the end of our time together she was actually pretty excited to go show off her new look.

This was the beginning of my experience with empowering women to feel amazing about themselves.

Of course, I had no idea at the time that’s what I was doing.

Have you felt the movement in this past year of Women Empowering Women? It’s been brewing for a while, but we’re seeing it come to the forefront now.

What I love is the beautiful transformation it’s allowing for women. First we were the happy homemakers, then we were so focused on our career and now we’re moving into the era where we’re balancing both … always working on doing it with grace and ease.

The beauty of it is that we can have it all. Even more beautiful, is that we’re realizing that we’re not doing it on our own. We can’t.

This is how women are empowering women. We are stepping into our true feminine power. And we’re doing it with the support of a community of women behind us. I know I am. And I know I couldn’t do it any other way.

If you’re looking for more inspiration to this, I encourage you to revisit my posting of the keynote speech at the USC Women’s Conference by Gayle Garner Roski.

Even more, this is a global movement. Women in the states are working SO hard to empower and enrich the lives of women in developing countries. Fair trade is a huge part of it. You may remember the interview I shared with Erika Mosebach of Global Daughter. I am so passionate about supporting her business because Global Daughter is giving women in Nepal an opportunity to support themselves and their families. All it takes to support these women is purchasing their fair trade items. It’s beautiful simplicity.

The final piece of women empowering women is YOU. We are so lucky to be naturally supportive of each other. What woman doesn’t give SO much of herself for others. However, we’re also realizing that it’s OK to do things just for ourselves. Wow. I think that’s huge.

So I put two challenges to you for this week:

1) What are you going to do to empower another woman? How are you going to offer your support?

2) What are you going to do for yourself? To empower yourself? What will make you feel absolutely fantastic about yourself?

BY CATHERINE CASSIDY featuring ERIKA MOSEBACH

A few months back, I hosted a Global Daughter shopping party with co-founder Erika Mosebach.

Even though she was a bit camera shy, I got Erika to sit down with me and talk about Global Daughter’s impact in Nepal and it’s mission.

Abundance

It’s been a while since I’ve posted! It’s been a whirlwind of a month and I’m even writing from a gorgeous home in Kauai right now.

I just got into Kauai from Maui last night and woke up for a quick run this morning before getting to work (yes, I’m actually in Kauai to work!). While I was running this quote I shared in my last newsletter popped into my head:

“Abundance is about looking at life and knowing that you have everything you need for complete happiness, and then being able to celebrate each and every moment!”  ~ Wayne Dyer

I was in Maui for the Maui Marathon and was lucky enough to have my parents and brother join my friend Gwen (also running the marathon) for the experience. Since my parents are in Nashville while I live in LA, it’s always nice to have time with them. Even more, my marathon got them back to Hawaii after 31 years (their honeymoon!). As somewhat of a workaholic, having them there to celebrate in my accomplishment really got me to sit back and relax. Actually enjoy my vacation!

Yesterday, I was disappointed I had to leave them as I was continuing on to Kauai and they were heading home. That feeling was put aside as soon as I landed in Kauai. When I arrived last night, I was greeted at the airport with a big smile and a beautiful orchid lei from my gorgeous friend Nancy Miller (check out www.consciousromance.com). Even more, the greetings from otherwise strangers (though, friends of Nancy’s) was overwhelmingly welcoming.

Nancy asked me a deep question at dinner: “What is your ideal vision?” Basically, what is your ideal life and style?

It really hit me that I AM living my ideal vision. Sure, I have many more things I want to accomplish, but I really, truly am living my life in the style that I’ve always envisioned for myself.

Then, while running, I was struck by how beautiful and peaceful it was. It would seem like I was running down a normal street and then suddenly I’d get a glimpse of the gorgeous clear blue ocean. Or, I’d look up and there’s the stunning mountains with a bit of a cloud cover just at the tip.

Yes, I know I’m in paradise, but I couldn’t help but think about how lucky and blessed I am.

The point is, in LA I’d been focusing on finances, but here in Hawaii I can’t help but recognize the abundance already in my life. It really is a blessed life!

I encourage you to think about all the amazing things in your life – the people, the experiences, the lifestyle – and focus on the positive. What Wayne Dyer is saying is that if you focus on the abundance already in your life and truly appreciate it, you will only attract more abundance.

To your abundant life and style!

How about starting a business?

Heck yea!

This comes up because once again I’m putting my body through the intensity of training for a marathon. As my knees and feet protest these efforts, I keep having to remind myself why I’m doing this. Oh yea, to raise money and awareness to support women’s cardiac care (still the number 1 killer of women – do you think stress has anything to do with it?).

Part of the reason I felt I could do it again (this is my second marathon – the first raising money for AIDS care and awareness) is because I was feeling like a rockstar during my 7 mile long runs.

Well, maybe I got ahead of myself. My 11 mile run was miserable. My feet hurt by mile 5, my right knee was a little bit uncomfortable and my legs were tired. What the heck was I thinking??

I made it through 12 miles on Sunday.

And it felt amazing! I even felt like I could have gone further!

Why this shift? Why does anything become more bearable? MINDSET!

I was determined and persistent. Not completing the run and the mileage was not an option.

Of course I couldn’t skip from a strong 7 mile run to a strong 26.2 mile run, but sometimes our high-achieving minds think that’s possible. This is great for an initial inspiration, but it can also lead to quick discouragement when reality shows us otherwise.

Yet, I know I will get to the 26.2 mileage point when the time comes to perform in September.

One foot in front of the other. Because I laid the foundation for my success in my weekly training. Because that is the only option; I will persist until I reach my goal.

When I realized these truths, I set myself up to have a great 12 mile run.

So, what is the moral of the story? First, you must set a goal and believe that you will achieve the goal. Then, you must put in place a training program or a plan to get you to that goal.

With this plan, you must remind yourself of two things:

  1. It’s simply one foot in front of the other. As busy, ambitious women doing it all, we can easily get ahead of ourselves.
  2. As amazing and thorough as your plans might be, know that they will likely change. We can’t foresee the future, we can only hedge bets. The best thing we can do is adapt.
Are you ready to run?

When setting goals and brainstorming dreams, I am always amazed how easy it is for people to sell themselves short. Even when coming up with a list of our wildest dreams that he hope to achieve, many of us (myself included, to be honest) sometimes catch ourselves saying, “Oh, my. I could never imagine having THAT!) What happens to us when we constrict ourselves when we dream? Our reality is even smaller. The secret to success is to make your dreams as big as you can possibly make them and then think about HOW you can achieve them.

Many of us get stuck on why: Why do I deserve that? Why would that work? Why would anyone pay me the amount I am asking for, or hire me for that job? For your purposes, why doesn’t matter. All that matters is how.

Your job is to figure out how you can be true to yourself and your values and acheieve the dreams and life that will make you happy. Break things down into short goals and benchmarks and then ask yourself about the next step, “How can I get there?” and follow along that path.

I guarantee that when you reach the end, you won’t care a bit about why it worked.

Here’s the soccer net tip I promised above: If you imagine kicking the ball just to the back of the next, you’re probably not going to get the ball in. How can you get a ball into a net? Kick it in there as if you want it to burst out the back and reach the sky in the image.

Another example I love is that of people who can break boards of bricks in karate. Check out Kevin Taylor, the world record holder, who broke 584 bricks in 57.5 seconds! You can bet he’s not asking why he’s able to do it as he sets this record- he’s only thinking how he can break the next set. How do people break bricks with their hands? Here is a little video on how to do it. The most significant point he shares in the video is this: don’t plan top your hand at the surface of the brick; it won’t break. You must aim your hand past the break.

This is the same for achieving your goals and dreams as well: if you aim only to achieve what you think is possible, your beliefs and limits will stop you. You must let yourself dream larger than the goal you are hoping to accomplish. For example, if you’d like to start a little video show on your site, seeing this as part of a larger dream to have a TV show is a way to aim your hand past that brick and achieve your goal. Just like the soccer goal- plan on kicking it through the net and you are more likely to score. Would Obama have achieved election in the Senate if he wasn’t dreaming of bigger goals? It’s a long way up that flag pole pictured here, but it’s not that far by comparison if you’re looking beyond it to the clouds. Success is often more about your perspective about what’s possible than it is about the force of your efforts. So, think about where you stop your hand when you plan to break your own bricks. At the surface of the brick where you’ll hurt your hand, or on the other side where you will have achieved your goal? How can changing this perspective help you leap ahead?

As women, we believe we can do it all.

AND WE CAN!

Though, it’s important to remember that we do need to ask for help sometimes. And we should! This way, we can be sure to have enough time to spend doing the things that make us happiest, whether it’s time with family, friends, exercising, etc.

In honor of Mother’s day … do something for yourself!

To give you an idea of how enlisting the help of someone else can make all the difference, take it from Jessica. She’s already fabulous, but now she’s showing the world she’s fabulous in style …

“I recently had the wonderful opportunity to work with Catherine Cassidy of LIFE*styled. I almost embarrassingly admit that, although I love color and design, I am a little clueless when it comes to awesome style and fashion. With a whole hearts and lots of laughter, Catherine and I tore through my entire wardrobe and found the pieces that made me look as good as I feel on the inside! We got rid of all the items that were not flattering or needed to be updated. Then, she completely styled everything I had from clothes to shoes to accessories. I now have that polished look I have been longing for and didn’t even have to buy one new item!! She even gave me a list of basics that can maximize my wardrobe and suggested places/brands I should shop to fit my style and needs. It was an inspiring, fun and very uplifting experience! I cannot recommend her enough!”

Apparently, according to the NY Times … your health! Of course, we already recognize our friends are so important to us and a great source of joy, but it doesn’t hurt to have some research backing it up. This rationalizes taking the time to meet for a dinner/drinks/a hike during a busy week. Enjoy!

Recently I had the pleasure of meeting a wonderful woman who shares my vision of empowering women, though she’s aiming to reach them at a younger, even more impressionable age through her online magazine.

Alexis Jones has a magnetic personality that makes you listen to what she has to say. This excites me because her message of a new kind of feminism is one that needs to be heard.

Recently, the LA Times profiled I Am That Girl and interviewed Emily Greener (no less magnetic than Alexis). I encourage you to read the article for your daily dose of empowerment.
