Step Into Style: 4 Weeks to YOUR Refined Style

Whether you’re an entrepreneur who recognizes the importance and brand image, a careerwoman climbing the ladder or a stay at home mom who volunteers a lot … stepping into your style is one of the best gifts you can give yourself.

Step into your truest confidence; your truest self.

Because the key is that it’s YOUR style. That’s why I put so much emphasis on PERSONAL style. It’s not about cookie-cutter, it’s not about being the trendiest and it’s not about spending the most money.

It’s about YOU! Your lifestyle, your career, your budget, your wants and needs.

Consider first what you want people to think when they first see you. Before you’ve even spoken. Do you think you garner that now? I hope you’re beginning to realize that you absolutely can with every encounter you have – whether personal or professional.

With U*styled’s Step Into Style: 4 Weeks to Your Refined Personal Style, I’ll work with you through the process that I take my clients through in person via teleclass. I’ve developed a unique way to share visuals with you to

What I love about this is that you get all this information in an easy to follow manner, complete with notes (and plenty of bonuses I’ll outline in a bit!) for a FRACTION of what it’d be to have me come work with you one on one.

This effectively takes the Closet Consultation process and breaks it out into digestible chunks! The format I’ve created makes it both visual and auditory. This process takes everything you might read in a Fashion Magazine and makes it real and approachable. Yes, after this process, you’ll even know how to streamline packing for a trip! (Hint: It’s all about mixing and matching!!)

U*styled is reaching out to all the women of America to make this a more beautiful world one woman at a time. And while U*Styled has clients in cities outside of LA, it’s my goal to make this more approachable to women nationwide. Will you help me spread the word?

As a woman who’s overcome many personal style battles, body image issues and frustration of ‘never having anything to wear’ … regardless of that closet overflowing with clothes, it’s my mission to make Fashion FUN for women again. Really, I’d love to see everyone really dressing everyday for every event (even if it’s just going to the grocery store!). We all love Mad Men and isn’t there something so beautiful about how people presented themselves then? I think so!

You and I both know that we feel more confident when we put in that extra effort to pull together an outfit, yet we don’t always do it. Why? Laziness? We’re tired? Too busy? Rushed? Budget?

No more!

This 4 week class will make it SO simple for you to dress your best everyday. (Seriously, using my own techniques long gone are the days of taking 30 minutes to get dressed … now I’m down to 3-5 minutes always!)

If you’ve ever had a doubt about your image or how others perceive you, then you need this course. For success in life and business, your personal image is just as important as your talent and skills. It’s how people perceive you when they first meet you. Even if we don’t want to admit it, there is a subconscious judgement that occurs within the first 30 seconds of meeting someone. Make sure your using those valuable seconds to your best advantage!

This course is for you if:

  • You’re gunning for a promotion. Studies show that how you present yourself for work everyday is noticed as it directly relates to how much you care about your work.
  • Want to attract new clients.
  • Want to attract your IDEAL clients. Trust me, they will notice how you present yourself.
  • Are ready to leave behind your single days. You never know when you’re going to be in front of a handsome stranger. Be prepared for every opportunity!
  • Present often – whether for your business or career.
  • Want to be the most stylish woman in the room.
  • Simply want to be that woman who turns heads when she walks into a room!

The course starts August 17, 2010 at 5 PM pacific and runs every Tuesday for 4 weeks until September 7, 2010. If you can’t make a class, you’ll get the class in your inbox, though live attendance is encouraged as there will be Q&A time at the end of each class.

And since I really want to make this accessible, I’ve decided to make the price even more reasonable. It’s a NO BRAINER!!

I can’t wait to see you leap into chic!

xo,

Catherine

One thing that kept coming up this weekend was VALUE. Offering value, perceiving value and most importantly, valuing yourself.

This is a huge question for all of us, but women most especially.

Time and again I’ll have women tell me they want to work with me and then get scared of the price. When they let that scare them away, that tells me they’re not ready for the value I can give them … and not just the value of my service, the realization that they’re worth it!

This might be a controversial and sensitive topic for you, but it’s one that needs to be addressed.

Quite frankly, I’m over it:

As a woman, you have so much to offer the world!!

Example A) Whether or not you have children, you’re a mother.

Women are natural nurturers. This translates to numerous hours fundraising for your booster club, supporting philanthropic causes, offering an ear for your girlfriends and mentoring other women. Unfortunately, this tends to translate to putting everyone’s needs in front of your own.

Example B) Women do better in school than men

More women graduate college, perform better on tests, are entering upper management, etc. Yet, you’re still earning less than your male counterparts. Even more so, you’re still doubting your abilities.

Example C) Women Start Businesses

With the recent economy, there has been a boom in women-owned businesses. Businesses that create jobs, stimulate the economy, add value to others lives and add income to their families’ bottom lines. However, you’re still taking on more than you can chew and not valuing your time enough to ask for help.

This subject means a lot to me because I get it, I’ve been there.

I’ve been the girlfriend who was always there no matter what – no matter how much drama, no matter if it was always the same drama and no matter if it ultimately actually hurt me. (Ironically, I have a very low ‘drama’ tolerance!)

I’ve been through those amazingly tough times where you can’t understand why someone would backstab you that way. I’ve been the one who was uncomfortable talking about money. I’ve been the one whose pride wouldn’t let her ask for help.

And I can tell you with absolute certainty that overcoming those limiting beliefs and recognizing my value line has had a direct and significant impact on the success of my business.

Basically, I took back the control. I decided what was best for me. I asked for help. I hired assistants. I’ve UPPED my VALUE!

So now, ask yourself, what do you most value about yourself?

Apple might be one of the more frustrating body types. Especially when you gain weight, as the majority of it hits your waistline.

Your body has it’s narrowest point above the natural waist, at the ribs. You also probably have pretty rockin’ legs!

A few celebs with Apple bodies:

Catherine Zeta JonesJessica Simpson

Their keys to successful style:

Create the Illusion of a Waist
Empire waists are perfect for apple bodied women. Your rib cage is your sm
Jennifer Hudsonallest part, so this is the best asset to accentuate (aside from your legs!) to create the hourglass illusion of a waist.

The second best for you are wrap tops and dresses. These don’t fit too tight and the way they wrap across your body creates the look of a beautiful waist and perfect curves.

Remember: No matter your size, it’s all about balancing proportions to create the look of that perfect hourglass ideal shape (which, by the way, only about 2% of women have the luxury of flaunting).

Add a belt
Here I go again! But, yes, a wide belt at the waist works to create your waist. I know it sounds counterintuitive, but trust me! If you’re not comfortable wearing a belt just yet, try a belted jacket (and if even that’s too much for you, simply a tailored jacket).

Joie Tunic

Lengthen the Torso
Wear tops that fit your figure – skimming the body. Definitely not tight, but not too loose either. Ideally, this includes a v-neck as well as a bit of tailoring to keep a shape and structure. This tunic from Joie is an excellent example.

Dark on Top
Wearing darker colors on top is an instantly slimming trick. Of course, this means you have to work your legs – so accentuate those great legs in lighter color skirts, pants, and denim. You have the luxury of wearing whatever color you want on bottom b/c you have such great stems.

A-line Dresses & Skirts
Goes back to three things I’ve highlighted – skimming your top half, empire waists, and accentuating your great legs. Need I say more?

Skinny Pants
Be careful of wearing anything too skinny as you’ll look out of proportion, but you can wear the skinny pant with boots look quite well. Or, skinny pants with great, chunky heels. But please, no skinny legs with flats. It just looks like you have chicken legs! Instead, definitely look for slim fitting or straight leg pants that, again, accentuate your great legs.

Last week I introduced the various body types and offered some quick tips to get you started dressing your best for your body type. This week starts the series of going into more depth for each body type.

PEAR is the most appropriate to start with as it’s the most common body type for women.

Your body is fuller at the hips and rear, and smaller on top with a defined waist.

A couple of celebs FAMOUS for their PEAR shaped curves …

These women definitely know how to dress their best for their body type. And they also don’t shy away from showing off their curves!

JLo Beyonce

Some keys to their success:

Dressing in Proportions
Wearing fitted on bottom while balancing it with something that adds a bit of bulk on top (whether a print, a jacket or a sweater). This creates the sense of the hourglass shape.

(Notice how Beyonce has a shoulder detail on her dress, this is how she adds weight to the top and effectively creates an hourglass shape.)

Think pencil skirt with a feminine blouse on top that nips in at the waist – either by being tucked in, by adding a belt or having waist of its own.

Wearing Darker Colors on Bottom
This draws attention to your slimmer top half. It also naturally slims your bottom half.

Bonus tip: NOT that you want to eliminate your curves, but you might want to control

them a bit! So, try this amazing underwear from Sarah Blakely of SPANXfame: ASSETS. Perfect for streamlining your shape under a dress or skirt that’s showing off your curves!

Beyonce Aline

Go A-Line
If you’re not ready for body hugging skirts and pants, A-line skirts and dresses will skim your curves without hugging them. They also put the focus on the thinnest parts of your body – your upper body and fabulous legs!

Try Pants of ALL Kinds!
They can really streamline a look. Whether a full, straight leg to add length to your overall look or a slim/skinny leg to play up your curves, pants create a flattering lean vertical line on your shape.

Add a Wide Belt

MichelleO

Put a wide belt (as opposed to a skinny belt) over a shift dress and/or cardigan or jacket to add a little bit of bulk to your top half while playing up your curves. This is an incredibly feminine and sophisticated look!

And you’re off! I challenge you today to look into your closet to find some of these items and put them together for yourself. AND WORK IT!

Own your curves!

If you want to attract wealth, success, love, happiness, etc. into your life … you have to walk the walk as well as talk the talk! In other words, you’ve got to LOOK the part of wealth, success, love and happiness!!

To your STYLED life!

So, a client recently asked me this question and while I was pretty surprised, I also completely understood. Surprised because we live in LA, the land of eternal youth. If anything, everyone always wants to look younger! I understood because when you’re younger and working towards professional success, you don’t want people to dismiss you or not take you seriously simply because of your age.

Now, on the flip side, I’ve had clients who were relatively young (early 30’s) who really needed to start dressing their age. They were dressing too young to be taken seriously professionally and/or personally.

So, as with everything, it becomes a delicate balancing act.

The question becomes this: How do you blend your personal style with your career image and aspirations?

A key tenant of mine comes into play: know your audience and your purpose, while staying true to your personality and style.

So, in a professional setting that means still being conservative, respectful and well dressed in great fitting clothes, but you have to be sure to inject a bit of personality to your look. That can come from the color of your suit jacket, a bold accessory, your favorite purse, a pretty scarf, gorgeous earrings, etc.

If you are true to your audience as well as yourself with your style, then you will be sure to have the confidence to go forward professionally with great confidence. Confidence is the key factor for winning anyone’s trust and ultimately business success.

The key takeaway? Your image is your brand. YOUR brand.

Ana Caban asked me to cleanse and revamp her closet to be featured on her site www.labuenalife.com.

I thought you, too, would like to get a glimpse into the process and the final results. Ana has a colorful and fun personality, so you can see that we incorporated that into her new outfits. The result? Sophisticated and pulled-together and FUN!

To follow up last week’s post on incorporating color into your wardrobe, I thought I’d share a bit more about WHY. Check out this quick summary of the meaning/perception of colors:

Red: Energy, war, danger, strength, power,  warmth, determination, attractiveness, beauty, passion, desire, and love.

Pink: Romance, love, compassion, femininity, passiveness and friendship.

Brown suggests stability and denotes masculine qualities.

Orange: Joy, enthusiasm, adventure, happiness, creativity, inspiration, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation.

Gold: Illumination, wisdom, wealth and high quality.

Yellow: Cheerfulness, strong communication, joy, purity, happiness, expressiveness, intellect, logic and energy.

NOTE: Be careful with your yellows, though as a dull yellow can be translated as caution, decay, sickness and jealousy.

Green: Growth, harmony, freedom, freshness, fertility, safety, balance, stability, endurance and money.

Turquoise: Transformation, imagination, clarity, rareness, change, newness and victory.

Blue: Tranquility, depth, stability, acceptance, trust, loyalty, wisdom, creativity, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven.

Purple: Power, respect, nobility, luxury, ambition, wealth and extravagance, wisdom, dignity, independence, creativity, and mystery.

White: Light, goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity.

Black: Power, elegance, formality, death, evil, and mystery (and fear).
